Take Ownership of a Folder or File in Windows 7 or Windows Vista

Taking ownership of a file or a folder is important if you want to replace or edit system folders or files, or just migrated other user files to your files. Taking ownership of these files can be a hassle especially if you really don’t understand how it works. Here is a simple and easy way to take ownership of files and folders using the right click content menu. Here is how to take ownership of a folder or file in Windows 7 or Windows Vista.

Take Ownership in Windows 7 or Windows Vista

We will be adding a “Take Ownership” to the right click content menu (Right click menu), for whenever you click on a file or a folder. Just download and merge the REG File, link below. Just make sure you backup your registry before you try to merge the reg file to your registry, just to be safe.

Next you will want to unzip the file and right click on Windows7Ownership.reg file and select Merge, just like the image below.

You will be prompted by User Account Control, so make sure you have admin rights, and click yes. Click Yes again on the Registry Editor prompt. Then try it out, right click on a file you want to take ownership and click Take Ownership.

Just watch the magic and see the file become yours. You now should be able to click on any file or folder and get the nice right click menu “Take Ownership” menu item. With this it will literally take ownership of the file or folder so you can do whatever you like with it.

This trick works both in Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Just make sure you back up your registry before you download and merge the registry file below.
