Install Fluxbox on Ubuntu Linux the Easy Way

Ubuntu uses the Gnome user interface, this is the window manager you use and the graphical user interface you see. Fluxbox, is similar to Gnome, as a window manager, but is extremely lightweight and customizable. Here is how to Install Fluxbox on Ubuntu.

If you don’t have Ubuntu you can download and install it either by using Wubi or going directly to the Ubuntu website.

Install Fluxbox on Ubuntu

The first set you need to make sure that is done is to make sure you have the universe repository setup. After you have that installed you will need to fire up your Ubuntu and go to the terminal under the Applications | Accessories | Terminal. You will need the root password and or administrator rights to proceed with the rest of this tutorial.

Install Fluxbox -1

In the prompt enter “sudo apt-get install fluxbox” it will look like this:

You will be prompted for your password so make sure to enter it to continue. After the install is finished installing, log out and select your login user name and at the bottom bar select Fluxbox from the list of Windows Managers.

When you log into Fluxbox you will see a totally different experience. To access the main menu just right click on the desktop. All your content menu will have different commands in them and different sub directories. Simply click on one to do something.

To get back out just right click on the desktop and chose Exit. You can always come back to the Fluxbox windows manager by simply selecting your

There ya go, enjoy using Fluxbox. If you want to try some other window manager for Ubuntu you can always install Blackbox on Ubuntu or you can install Xubuntu window manager as well.
