If you own an Apple TV and a Mac you probably notice the Apple remote for the Apple TV will be hijacked by your Mac. This can be really annoying and intrupt your Apple TV time. This happens because a little annoying setting on your Mac, the IR-Receiver. No matter what Mac you have, Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, or even an iMac this setting is there. Here is a quick and easy way to disable Apple remote from controlling your Mac by disabling the IR-Receiver under system preferences.
Disable Apple Remote
Open up the System Preferences and under the Personal group click on the Security & Privacy menu.
You will need to click the little lock in the left hand corner in order to make any changes to the Security & Privacy menu. Enter in your administrative rights to continue.
At the bottom of the Security & Privacy menu check the box next to Disable remote control infrared receiver.
Go ahead and close the System Preferences window and try the Apple remote on your Mac. That’s right it will no longer work. I do have to say this is almost as annoying as the Mac start up sound, here is how to disable Mac startup sound.
As long as you follow the instructions above you will be able to re enable the Apple remote receiver by removing the check in the box you checked before.
